Vorschlag für DIN-Prüfvorlagen für zukünftige Version von DIN 33870
1. mit deutschem Text mit MTL-Code in Distiller Startup Verzeichnis: DG22

1. Version and changes
2002-09-05: New improved version 2.0 of this material. This new version replaces the older version 1.9 in the directory DE18

1. Test with black areas of 5% area coverage (X form) and seven additonal test pages.

2. Measurement data in the directory "Copy Adobe Acrobat Distiller/Startup" for:
Linearisation of the output grey steps and output of the tables and graphical representation of the results
MTLE00SP.PS

3. It is recommended to study first the following workflow paper (7 pages, 345 kByte)
D33870E.PDF

Four files are necessary for the test. For download the use of Table 1 (introduction) or Table 2 (professional test) in recommended.

2. Test goal and short description of the test procedure
Step S1: Start output of 20 pages
with 16 non equidistant grey steps (X form) on the last page no. 20 for the measurement of CIE lightnesses L* no. 0 to 31.

Step S2: Linearized output of 10 printer series each of 1/10 of the declared OEM yield, e. g. 10 times 500 pages. Each set of 500 pages include 493 pages with and seven additional test pages with the 16 grey steps (X form) on the last page for the measurement of CIE lightnesses L*

Remark: At the end of the life time of the toner modul the 16 grey steps are not any more equidistant and may be very irregular. This is specified by measurement the CIE lightness differences L* in tables and figures (compare step S3)

Step S3: Produce on different pages two Tables and two Figures for the specification of the reproduction properties (CIELAB lightness differences L*) for the 16 step grey output of e. g. page 500, 1000, ..., 5000 according to Annex G of DIN 33866-1:2000-08 and ISO/IEC 15775:1999-12.

3. introduction: toner yield test for 20 pages (one series)
Part 3 includes an introduction in the toner yield test with an output of only 20 pages. The results are presented in form of two tables and two figures. This part is not necessary for an advanced user which may skip directly to part 4.

Part 4 includes the running of the test with an output of e. g. 5000 pages. The results are presented on five pages. Each page includes two tables and two figures.

Example: see 20 example pages of the file L22E00NP.PDF

The following files may be downloaded or the text files (.TXT) may viewed first from Table 1 by a web browser in the web window.

1. The file L22E00NP.PS (N=No STARUP file) is transfered with the software Adobe Acrobat Distiller to a PDF file and printed on a printer as output S1.

2 . The lightnesses L* of the 2 x 16 grey steps of the output S1 (last page no. 20) are measured in the sequence 0 to 31.

3. The 2 x 16 L*-lightness data of the output S1 are included in the file MTLE00SP.PS in the directory "STARTUP" of the Copy of Acrobat Distiller.

4. The file L22E00SP.PS (S=Startup file) is transferred to a PDF file with the Copy of Acrobat Distiller.

Remark: The PDF file is produced with the L* lightness data of the output S1 in the directory "STARTUP".
Attention: A Restart of the Distiller is necessary if any data in the "STARTUP" is changed.

5. The output of the file L22E00SP.PDF leads to the intended linearized printer output for the grey steps of the last page no. 20.

6 . The lightnesses L* of the 2 x 16 grey steps of the output S2 (last page no. 20) are measured in the sequence 0 to 31.

7. The 2 x 16 L*-lightness data of the output S2 are additionally included in the file MTLE00SP.PS in the directory "STARTUP" of the Copy of Acrobat Distiller.
Attention: A Restart of the Distiller is necessary if any data in the "STARTUP" is changed.

Example: see one example page of the file X22E00SP.PDF

8. The file X22E00SP.PS (X=Result) is transferred to a PDF file with the Copy of Acrobat Distiller.

9. The output of the file X22E00SP.PDF includes the results of S1 and S2 in two tables and two figures.

Remark: This output shows the specification of the reproduction properties of the start and linearized output.

Table 1: Test files according to a new draft of DIN 33870:2001-01 for a device L (normal L* lightness range) using the PS operator w* setgray for the output of only 20 pages

Remark 1: The files with the extension P.TXT ared used for the reading with a web browser and the files with the extension P.PS are recommended for the download.

Remarks for the files:
There are four identical PostScript-files (except the file name for identification) with the file extensions "NP.TXT", "NP.PS" and "SP.TXT" and "SP.PS" file.

The files with the extentions ".TXT" show directly the PostScript-program code in the browser window.

The files with the extention "P.PS" must be downloaded to the local disk and transfered to a file "P.PDF" by the local software Adobe Acrobat Distiller or an equivalent software.

The results of the tests in Step S2 are independend of the Distiller version as long as all outputs of the steps S1 to S3 are made with the same version of Adobe Acrobat Reader , e. g. version 4.0.

One can use the produced PDF files to show the DIN-test charts according to DIN 33870 on any monitor and on any colour or black and white printer (not only on PS printers) with the software Adobe Acrobat Reader .

4. Running the toner yield test for e. g. 5000 pages
Note: An advanced user may skip section 3 and start with this section 4.

This test is divided into10 parts with 1/10 of the declared OEM toner yield each. For this 10 output series (scount1=1, scount2=10) are produced with for example 500 pages each (pcount1=1, pcount2=500).

1. In the file L22E00NP.PS the default values scount2=1, pcount2=20 (please search at the beginning of the file) are replaced for example by the data scount2=1 (not 10! here), pcount2=500.

2. The file L22E00NP.PS (N=No STARUP file) is transfered with the original software Adobe Acrobat Distiller to a PDF file and printed as output S1 on a printer.

3 . The lightnesses L* of the 2 x 16 grey steps of the output S1 (e. g. last page no. 500) are measured in the sequence 0 to 31.

4. In the file L22E00SP.PS the default values scount2=1, pcount2=20 (please search at the beginning of the file) are replaced for example by the data scount2=10, pcount2=500.

Example: see 5000 example pages of the file L22E00SP.PDF (11,4 MByte !)

5. The file L22E00SP.PS (S=Measurement data S1 in STARUP file) is transferred to a PDF file with the Copy of Acrobat Distiller.
Attention: A Restart of the Distiller is necessary if any data in the "STARTUP" is changed.

Remark: The produced file PDF includes 5000 pages: 10 times 493 pages in X form with 5% black area coverage and 7 additional pages with the 16 equidistant grey steps on pages 500, 1000, 1500, ... 5000.

5.0 Probleme mit Software Adobe Acrobat Distiller 4.0 oder Adobe Acrobat Reader 4.0

Problem DINA4 page Portrait or Landscape:
The software Adobe Acrobat Distiller has a default paper format, e. g. A4 Portrait or A4 Landscape. This default value may be seen under
Distiller/default values/preferences/extended

Solution: One may change the width to 842 points (=297 mm) and the high to 595 points (=210 mm) and store the start option, e. g. "PrintOptimized" as "PrintOptimizedL" (L=Landscape). Original and Copy Distiller may work then continuously with this Landscape option and the pages may be shown as intended by the software Adobe Acrobat Reader in the format Landscape. For the output with the Reader it may be necessary to choose again the option "A4 Landscape".

Problem fonts:
Under Windows the software Distiller may produce a failure message for the four used fonts Times, Times-Bold, etc. There is still a production of the PDF file. The Distiller has a default value for the fonts. One can see this default value under
Distiller/default values/preferences/fonts

Solution: Under "Inclusion" the 14 Base (Adobe) fonts may be included or not. One may choose for the four Adobe-Times fonts Inclusion "No". Then there is not any more a failure message during the production of a PDF file.
