linearizing 16 step colour output of different file formats PS, PDF, BMP, GIF, TIF etc. Basic colour series

Output linearization of 16 step colour series by CIELAB colour measurement of the start output
No Linearization Method (N) and CM Method using data in the File (F), or in the Distiller Startup (S) directory, or in the PS Device (D)

For similar Methods and files to produce a start and linearized output of a single Figure or many Figures of the ISO/IEC-test charts or the complete ISO/IEC-test charts, see DE00

1.0 Different model files for Linearization Method (CM) of 16step colour series

The file extentions are defined by 4 or 5 characters, e g. NP.PS and NP.PDF:
One character describes the output by N=No or F=File
Three or four characters describe the file format:

This leads for No (N) Linearization Method to the file extentions:
(NA.PS->NA.TXT) (NB.PS->NB.BMP) (NG.PS->NG.GIF) (NH.PS->NH.HTM_GIF) (NI.PS->NI.HTM_JPE) (NJ.PS->NJ.JPE) (NP.PS->NP.PDF) (NT.PS->NT.TIF)

This leads for File (F) Linearization Method to the file extentions:
(FA.PS->FA.TXT) (FB.PS->FB.BMP) (FG.PS->FG.GIF) (FH.PS->FH.HTM_GIF) (FI.PS->FI.HTM_JPE) (FJ.PS->FJ.JPE) (FP.PS->FP.PDF) (FT.PS->FT.TIF)

2. 0 Examples

PS output files NA.PS and FA.PS useful for a PS device only:
The file NA.PS (No Linearization Method) includes no output measurement data of the start output step S1. The file NA.PS will produce the standard output in series "N:".
The file FA.PS (F=File Linearization Method) includes the output measurement data (CIELAB data) of the file NA.PS. The file FA.PS will produce the linearized output for the 16step grey and colour scales in the series "F:".

There are three steps S1 (Start output), S2 (Linearized output), and S3 (Result output) recommended here:

Step S1: Start output of the 16step colour series W CMYN and W - OLV(CMY) between the colour white W (paper white) and the four colours CMYN or the four colours OLV(CMY).
Remark: The output measurement data are used to produce the linearized output. For linearization the CIELAB data of all 16step colour series W CMYN and W OLV(CMY) (8 x 16 x 3 data) of step S1 are necessary and must be included in the file of step S2.

Step S2: Linearized output of the all 16step colour series which are approximately equidistant in CIELAB colour space.

Step S3: Result output with the specification of the reproduction properties of the start output and the linearized output according to the method given in Annex G of DIN 33866-1:2000-08 and ISO/IEC 15775:1999-12.

Short description of the method using the PDF output method for the device O and for different versions of Adobe Acrobat Distiller:
1. The file www.ps.bam.de/DE14/10O/O10E00NP.PS is used to produce the start PDF ouput on a PS printer.
2. The four 16step colour series of the output NP are measured in the sequence F to 0 (from the colour to the white).
3. The four 16step CIELAB colour data of the output NP are included in the file FP.
4. The file www.ps.bam.de/DE14/10O/
O10E00FP.PS is used to produce the linearized PDF ouput on a PS printer.
5. The four 16step colour series of the output FP are measured in the sequence F to 0 (from the colour to the white).
6. The four 16step CIELAB colour data of the output NP (step S1) and FA (step S2) are included in the file RP (R=result).
7. Steps 1 to 6 for a start and linearized PDF output on any printer (instead of the PS output on a PS printer) are produced with different versions of Adobe Acrobat Distiller to show the differenses beetwen older and newer versions of Adobe Acrobat Distiller .

1. Output linearization of the figures B4 and D4 of the chromatic ISO/IEC-test charts no. 2 and no. 4

If the start printer output of the ISO/IEC-test chart fails to pass some of the ISO/IEC-tests according to ISO/IEC 15775, e. g. to recognize the 16 steps of the 16step colour series or all the Landolt -rings, then there is the intention for an linearized printer output.

The following Table 1 shows examples for the specification of the reproduction properties of the start output and the linearized output according to the method given in Annex G of DIN 33866-1:2000-08 and ISO/IEC 15775:1999-12.

Table 1: Specification of the reproduction properties of the W CMYN and W OLV(CMY) output using three different Adobe Acrobat Distillers for producing PDF files and using the PS operator cmyn* setcmykcolor (* = relative coordinates in CIELAB color space) and the PDF output file.

In Table 1 three different versions of Adobe Acrobat Distillers using the PostScript operator: cmyn* setcmykcolor (series www.ps.bam.de/DE18/10X/X10E00FP.PDF, X=F,O,T) are shown. The files with the extention NP.PDF (N=no Linearization Method) and FP.PDF (F=File Linearization Method) distinguish only by a few lines of PS code at the beginning. This code includes the CIELAB data of the start output S1 produced by the file NP.PDF and the Linearization Method code which linearizes the colour output in step S2.
